It is Brad's grandfather's name. Not that it makes it any easier on the child, but I imagine they will find something nice to call him.

Here is a newer article, from the hospital newsletter, with a better picture.

http://www.uclh.nhs.uk/News/2009/Singer%20thanks%20NHS%20for%20saving%20the%20life%20of%20her%20premature%20baby.htm

If the link doesn't work, here is the article:

Quote:
Singer thanks NHS for 'saving the life' of her premature baby
30 December 2009
Acclaimed folk-rock singer Martha Wainwright has praised staff at the UCLH neonatal unit for ‘saving the life’ of her new baby boy Arcangelo who was born nine weeks prematurely.
Martha, said she and her husband Brad would be telling the story of Arcangelo and his care at the University College Hospital neonatal unit ‘for the rest of our lives’.
She added: “Brad and I want to thank the doctors and nursing staff at the hospital from the bottom of our hearts.”
Canadian-born Martha’s plans for a natural home birth were dashed when her waters broke on November 16. She had been rushed to University College Hospital shortly after performing a gig in central London. Around 12 hours later, following an emergency Caesarean, Arcangelo, was born weighing just 1.5 Kg,( approx 3lb 5oz) He was on an incubator until December 8.
But thanks to the expertise of staff at the unit – which offers speech and language therapists, dieticians and psychologists to help with the development of premature babies – Arcangelo is now looking forward to a healthy future.
Martha said: “The doctors and nurses at the hospital certainly saved Arcangelo’s life. I was supposed to be on a plane the next morning and Brad was supposed to be on a plane going to a different place. We were lucky I went into labour when I did because otherwise he would not have survived. It’s thanks to the expertise of people at this hospital that he has thrived.”
Martha was full of praise for the after care at the unit which has equipped her and Brad to deal with the needs of a premature baby. “Because he was premature he is more sensitive to sights and sounds and everything needs to be done at a much slower pace.
“The sensitivity to the baby’s needs has been obvious. Whether it’s how to change the diaper, how to dress him, how to hold him and eventually how to breast feed, all of this would have been a scary experience but having the support of experts here has been invaluable.”
And Martha and Brad have established bonds with parents, as well as staff, on the unit.
“It is a remarkable unit and we have met some inspirational people who have been through a lot. You make friends very quickly – people open up right away because there is an empathy and they want to share their story with you because outside friends might not fully understand,” said Martha.
As a ‘thank you’ to those involved in her and Arcangelo’s care, Martha invited 14 members of staff, and some parents, to her recent gig at the Royal Albert Hall. ‘A Wainwright Family Christmas’ included performances by her brother Rufus, mother Kate McGarrigle along with in-laws, cousins and aunts. The evening was compered by French and Saunders and also included performances by Elbow’s Guy Garvey and Boy George.
Martha added: “People living under a public health system will have a tendency to complain about it. But when you are in it and you really need it, that system comes through for you. There’s a deep understanding here that the first priority is the patient and that is obvious in the quality of care we have received.”
And when Martha and Brad look back on their time at UCH, it will be with fond memories. “We had a special arrival who will always be connected to this city and to this country and we are incredibly grateful for the treatment that we received. We will never forget this time and it will always be a story we will tell people for the rest of our lives.”
The University College Hospital Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing opened in November 2008 and was formally opened in January 2009 by HRH The Princess Royal.
The neonatal unit is the perinatal centre for the North Central London Perinatal Network. The unit treats special care babies from Camden and Islington and provides more complex care for babies from north central London. Because of its links with the nearby Great Ormond Street Hospital the unit offers very specialist treatment for babies from the rest of the UK and abroad.
The unit offers a truly multi-disciplinary service with the full range of professionals including speech and language therapy, dietetics and psychology. Parent facilities and support is provided, the latter in conjunction with the charity Bliss.

Carina Crash and I were discussing this the other day. I thought the pronounciation would be "Ar-can-jello" thinking that it's an Italian name but she pronounced it "Arc-an-hello" which would be a Spanish pronounciation. She had recently had dinner with Rufus in which he spoke of the baby, so I asked her how he pronounced it and she said he didn't...he just referred to it as "the baby." Then I asked her how she could possibly fail to glean such trivial information and more importantly, what the baby's nickname will be. It didn't occur to her to ask, but Cherry Vanilla was also at this dinner so I told Carina she must ask Cherry about this very unusual name and so she's promised to do so. So now we wait. Tick tock, tick tock. Laughing

According to an interview with Martha, "Arcangelo" is a family name handed down to the baby.

[...] When we saw him and considered his special entry into this world, Brad’s grandfather’s name seemed the best name for him. Arcangelo was born on November 16.

I'm quoting this because for some reason, TimesOnline links only work when their quoted by someone. Confused

We have just returned from Amsterdam where we saw Martha's Piaf show - abolutely stunning! Why on earth is she not more famous and popular?
Anyway - if you have a chance, go see her, you will certainly not regret it!
